Social Media Pitfalls

Social Media - How to Avoid The Pitfalls

Social Media can be a real asset to your business however there are some pitfalls that can catch the unwary and turn what could be a profitable marketing campaign into a disasterous waste of time, money & energy.

Activity does not equal Achievement

It's very easy to spend lots of time using Social Media and convince yourself that you are working! Don't allow yourself to fall into the trap of feeling good about all the hours your devote to the task. It's far better to have a set of clear goals in mind and measure success based on those. It's all about doing the right things to drive the right responses.

Size really doesn't Matter

Don't get fooled into thinking that the number of followers on Twitter is important or the number of fans on Facebook. It's really all about quality. It's far better to have a smaller community that is responsive to buying from you than it is to have a massive list that isn't listening to you.

Frankly the guru's who tell you that a big list is the goal are only saying that because they have a big list. Anyone can build a big list but business is only made from a quality list.

Don't Cross the Line

It's very tempting to follow the so called experts of Social Media and start to be all upfront and personal with your customers. This may be completely inappropriate for your business and it could quite easily damage customer relationships.

It's far better to remain professional whilst still being social. The best way to grasp this is to imagine you have just bumped into one of your customers in a coffee shop. What would you say?

You certainly wouldn't start talking about your company results - too boring! Also you wouldn't start showing them pictures of you on the beach from your last holiday - too personal. I'm sure you would think of something to say that was socially engaging whilst not over stepping your professional relationship and that's exactly the tone you need to adopt on Social Media.

Avoid the Minefield

You'd be forgiven for thinking that maybe there are too many hazards in Social Media for your business and perhaps you should just avoid it. That would be a mistake because there are some real opportunities for your business to grow.
